Canoe Rentals

Proper Use and Safety Precautions 1 of 2

Before use

Consider if taking your phone and other electronic devices is essential because they can become wet and destroyed or lost from the trip. We are not responsible for lost or damaged items.

Canoes

Do not stand in the canoes at any time as they are unstable, and you can be thrown from the boat.

When using the canoe, it’s important to sit on the floor in rough water situations including incoming waves from boats, weather, or any other rough water situation.

Sitting on the chairs or standing up during a rocking motion from waves can cause you to fall in the water or even capsize the canoe/boat. If you are using a canoe for the first time, it is highly recommended that you watch some training videos to understand how to use a canoe and even how to use the paddles for movement.

Strokes – Please see J-stroke, forward stroke, and backward stroke before canoeing to familiarize how to gain momentum.

(Pushover stroke) and (draw over stroke)s are good to know also.

Paddles – it is important to watch your paddles when moving them from side to side because you can accidentally hit another person in the canoe when switching sides.

Forward movement is mainly from the person sitting in the front with forward strokes.

Side movement is mainly from the person at the back of the boat using J strokes.

Life Jackets

These should be worn at all times. In the event of capsizing the boat or falling out of the boat, you may not be able to get back into the boat before swimming to shore and it can be exhausting dragging the boat, so the life jacket can save your life and graded by the US coast Guard. You must have a life jacket for each person on board at all times.

Water – Drink plenty of fresh clean cool water

It is by far safer to stay inside the walls of the docking area. After leaving the walls of the docking area the water can become considerably rougher to move in and easier to capsize. Use Caution out of docking area.

Inside the water, there is the possibility of branches and other sharp items, debris related to wildlife and organic materials from the woods, and also debris from the docks including but not limited to wood, cement, other construction materials. There are hooks hanging from old docks so they should be avoided. Fisherman should be avoided as they are casting sharp hooks into the water area and yest this is Florida, so there is wildlife. The water varies in depth in the Sanford Lake; outside the channel the water is relatively shallow under 6 ft deep.

Proper Use and Safety Precautions 2 / 2

Getting in and out of the Canoe

From a dock- after the canoe is tied up to the dock, sit on the dock and place feet in the canoe and hands on the edge of the dock,  pivot your body into the boat grasping onto each side of the canoe. See video on website. Roxlypersona.com

From Canoe to Dock – after the canoe is tied up to the dock, Place palms of hands behind you one at a time on the edge of the dock and slowly slide your bottom to the edge pushing up on the dock to sit on dock. See video on website roxlypersona.com

Capsized Canoe!

Your safety is #1 but please consider the environment and understand that a canoe can be flipped back over after a capsize event. Canoes are made to be flipped back over.

Steps

1.      Don’t panic.  -   If you don’t have your life vest on, put it on immediately. Roll the canoe over to its upright position. The canoe will be full of water.

2.      Position yourself in the middle of the canoe gripping edges of the canoe with both hands.

3.      Try to get what water you can by rocking it a bit and using what you can to get some water out.

4.      Reenter the canoe by reaching for far side of canoes edge on the far side of the boat away from you using it to pull yourself up. ( if you have someone with you, at this point, have one person on each side of the canoe at the center points of the canoe and both pull yourselves up at the same time to use the counterweight to balance the boat. Remove the water and carry on.
